EFT – Emotional Freedom Technique

EFT – EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE

EFT – short for Emotional Freedom Technique – is one of the most powerful healing techniques I have ever used.  It works phenomenally well for both physical and emotional problems.

Below are the instructions so you can use it yourself.

For video demonstrations and more help (including individual EFT therapy sessions on the telephone and group sessions via the internet) I recommend my favourite EFT therapist Brad Yates

Tapping – EFT – Introduction

In recent times acupuncture, body-mind therapy, Kineseology and other therapies, which aim to balance and unblock the energy systems are being used more and more with great effect in the West.

Now, newer therapies are developing based on ancient principles, which are fast, easy and effective and can be used anywhere by almost anyone.

One such group of therapies have been called the
‘Energy Psychologies’, which mostly involve tapping over various energy meridians in the body (rather than sticking needles in as in acupunture).

Tapping – EFT – When Tapping May Appear Not To Work

The only this tool may appear not to work, is if the symptom you’re dealing with is trying to tell you something and you are ignoring, or have not yet heard, the message:

  • If you have physical needs you are not fulfilling.

For example – if you are lacking water or rest – the tapping will not relieve the symptom until you correct the lack.

Or if you have a pain such as a toothache or appendicitis, that needs specialist attention.

Tapping in these circumstances may not get rid of the pain altogether until you find the specialist help you need for this particular condition, but the pain can be alleviated enough to make it bearable while you get help.

Even this sort of physical pain is probably due to past belief and energy imbalances, which in some circumstances can be dealt with by energy therapy and the other healing tools you’re about to learn.

However – it may be that the imbalance has been going on too long to deal with quickly enough in this way – and so surgical intervention may be necessary and the clearing can come later.

  • If symptoms are telling you about an emotional need you have not resolved.

The symptom will not disappear if you are leaving the situation unchanged without clearing the old patterns.

However, tapping in these circumstances will help you to be in a better state of mind to clear the old patterns and change the situation, so that you no longer need the symptom.

For example – if you have a stomach-ache because someone is bullying you – tapping will not stop the pain so that you can put up with being bullied.

Instead, it will help you to clear the old beliefs and  patterns that caused you to attract the bullying and so allow you find an alternative to the bullying and then the pain can stop.

When Jane arrived for help she was crying desperately and telling me I had to help her change because her partner wasn’t happy with her the way she was and so she needed to change.

Within 5 minutes of beginning to tap she was calm and happy, realising she had no need to change – that she was fine the way she was; now she was clearing her old beliefs and ready to be herself in spite of her partner and his criticisms.

You Don’t Have To Believe Tapping Will Work For You

Unless you have already had experience of the energy psychologies, you may find the procedure rather bizarre at first.

However ludicrous it may seem, you’ll discover it is very effective and you have nothing to lose and lots to gain by using it.

You do not have to believe it will work.

I’ve worked with many people who didn’t believe that tapping could work – until they experienced the results for themselves.

I’ve also worked with babies and animals who knew nothing about what was happening, yet the methods still worked.

Preparing to Tap

First decide which uncomfortable feeling or sensation (physical or emotional) you are going to deal with now.

It’s ok if you prefer to start with an emotional feeling, but I would suggest you practice with a physical pain or sensation first if you can because it’s sometimes easier to notice how much a physical feeling is changing.

It’s preferable, though not essential to be as specific as possible about the feeling you’re dealing with.  For example, if it’s a physical pain, take notice of exactly where the pain is, how strong i t is and the nature of the pain – whether it’s sharp, or throbbing or aching and so on.

The nature and site of the pain may change before the intensity changes and you will only be aware of the change if you have noticed these before you start.

If it’s an emotional feeling you’re dealing with notice if you can what the feeling is about specifically.

For example, you may at first notice you are feeling generally upset or stressed, then notice what you are upset or stressed about – such as –

‘I’m angry with John’ or
‘I’m frightened I will fail my exam’ or
‘I feel lonely / jealous / hurt / unlovable’

Write down how strong that feeling is now – on a scale from 0 – 10

Where 0 is no problem
and 10 is as bad as it could be

The Tapping Process – How To Use Tapping

For video demonstrations and more help (including individual EFT therapy sessions on the telephone and group sessions via the internet) I recommend my favourite EFT therapist Brad Yates

Find the karate chop point

This is the point on the edge of your hand (it doesn’t matter which hand you use) that would come into contact with an object if you were giving the object a karate chop – a point half way between the base of your little finger and your wrist

Use the tips of your first two fingers – on your other hand

With these finger tips tap gently on the karate chop point.

While you are tapping on this point Say 3 times

‘Even though I have this headache / feel worried (or whatever your pain or feeling is – I have this stomach ache / my foot is sore / I’m feeling sad etc) …….
I completely love myself (or if you find that difficult for now you can say – I want to love myself)’

It doesn’t matter whether or not the statement seems true, whether you feel stupid doing it, or whether you believe in what you are doing – just do it – you have nothing to lose and lots to gain!

Now using the tips of your fingers – of one or both hands
Tap gently at least 7 times – At each of the following places:

  • On the top of your head
  • At the inner tip of your eyebrow
  • On the bone at the outer edge of the eye
  • On the bone under your eye
  • Half-way between nose and upper lip
  • Half-way between lower lip and chin
  • On the upper chest – 3 cm down & out from the notch in the breast bone
  • Under the arm – Down from the armpit about where a bra strap would go round

BIG HINT:

You can do the whole process in your imagination if both your hands are out of action, if you are in public, or you are trying to go to sleep – it works just the same.

Now you’ve completed one round of tapping – assess again how strong your feeling is on a scale from 0-10.

  • If you have the same feeling but it is less strong, go through the tapping process again, until the feeling is gone altogether.
  • If the feeling is now a different feeling, assess the new feeling on the 0 – 10 scale and then go through the tapping process for the new feeling (for example if the pain has moved to a different location or you are feeling a different emotion).
  • If the feeling has not changed, make sure you are looking after yourself in all the best ways physically (for example you are resting if you have damaged a joint, you are drinking plenty of water and you are eating well) and then ask yourself

‘If this had an underlying emotional cause what might it be?’

Listen to the first thing that comes to your mind and then tap for that cause or make the necessary changes  in your life, before you reassess the pain again.

For example – if a pain is not relieved completely using the tapping process, ask yourself what might be the underlying physical or emotional cause.

If you don’t know – guess the answer (that is use your intuition).

If you guess it’s because you are not drinking enough water or taking enough minerals or because you need more rest, then you can decide to adjust your diet and supplements or your lifestyle and then repeat the tapping and notice what happens.

If you guess it’s because you’re worried about money you might, for example repeat the tapping using:

‘Even though I’m worried about money’ or

‘Even though I’m worried I can’t pay the bill’

If occasionally you were to find your symptoms were still unchanged it’s likely you could use your other healing tools or get help from a therapist experienced in using these methods and who can tell more clearly exactly what you need to be tapping for.
